Keep the beautiful pen busy.

Brooklyn, NY

Handwritten is a place and space for pen and paper. We showcase things in handwriting, but also on handwriting. And so, you'll see dated letters and distant postcards alongside recent studies and typed stories.

Handwriting is a form of protest. It is a declaration of memory, an act of existence, and a reminder of the difference between being silent and silenced. Handwriting is a choice. Therefore, it can be erased, but it can also be rewritten. And while some are intent on doing just this — rewriting history — we are intent on cataloguing the remains. Because today, the power of the pen has shifted. Sure, governments still declare war or independence with their signature, but it is now the instrument of the resistance. It is in the hands of the people. Those in power can mute our microphones or change the channel, but when they come outside, they will see us there. And that will be a sight they cannot unsee. Consider this column an open call to all you artivists out there. Show up, hit record, resist, and repeat. #handwritersresist
